Name

Scott Whitaker

Education

1987-89 - Bachelor of Arts, Visual Arts, Queensland University of Technology (Formerly Brisbane College of Advanced Education).

Employment

2001-present - Founder and Director, artHIVES artist-run-websites.

artHIVES is an artist's self managed website editing solution and shopping cart that requires no technological knowledge or special software. Build your own website within hours, quickly and easily. artHIVES provides free training, face-to-face or over the phone and full ongoing support.

artHIVES began life as an ASIC registered company in November 2001, with the first site going live in June the following year.

artHIVES was developed by Doggett Street Studio who had one of the earliest and most dynamic art gallery websites in Australia, regularly publishing and selling exhibitions online since 1998.  It was from this early use of the internet to promote and sell artworks that the concept for artHIVES grew.

Doggett Street Studio recognised that artists needed a website solution that they would be able to control themselves, whether it was the simple task of adding a new achievement to their CV, publishing a review or creating a gallery of new images. It needed to be something that was dead simple to use and edit with out the user needing any technical knowledge.

Importantly the artists websites had to be ad-free and unbranded.  The sites also needed to be clean and simple, focusing the attention on the artworks and the artists the sites are designed to showcase.

It was also essential that the galleries that represent artists were not excluded by an artHIVES website, so artists are given the choice to direct enquires to their gallery or galleries rather than handling all enquiries themselves.

1993-2015 - Co-founder and Director, Doggett Street Studio, Brisbane, Queensland.

When Doggett Street Studio was established in 1993 it created a new model for an accessible art gallery available for use by artists, curators, interstate galleries, touring bodies and institutions. In more than two decades of operation Doggett Street Studio hosted  750 exhibitions showcasing 30,000 artworks by more than 500 artists.

Doggett Street Studio successfuly provided a highly professional and dependable service including organisation of all aspects of exhibitions, from initial planning, promotion, publication design, exhibition design and installation, exhibition opening, client development, cataloging and sales of artworks, handling shipping and storage of artworks.

Doggett Street Studio was one of the first galleries in Australia to simultaneously publish and sell exhibitions online.  In 2001 Doggett Street Studio developed artHIVES, a website solution for artists.

In classical religion a genius loci was the protective spirit of a place. In contemporary usage, genius loci refers to the distinctive atmosphere of a location, or a spirit of place. It is this spirit that Stephen Newton’s sculptural practice has drawn on since 1987. His process and evolution as an artist are closely connected to the intrinsic energy and beauty found in natural materials, which he uses to explore relationships between human nature and natural and built environments. This book is a selection of pivotal works from Newton’s practice over the last twenty five years including studio work, indoor sculptures, environmental installations and major commissions.

ISBN: 978-0-9871970-5-4

Ted Barraclough has carved and whittled for as long as he can remember however it was in retirement that Barraclough began carving and painting this series of native Australian birds.

In his essay for this book Glenn Barkley (curator Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney) writes: "I feel that although there may be those artists whose feather counts might be more correct, and whose realism is more exact, this has little to do with what ‘art’ might be. And the lack of emphasis on craft runs counter to a hyper over-skilling and this is what makes Barraclough’s birds so good ... Ted Barraclough is a modern day Gepetto, bringing the timber to life as if only he can hear a sound within it and find its natural form".

This 440 page hardcover book contains 253 beautiful full colour photographs of Barraclough's birds capturing the passionate skill of the artist and the imbued personality of his creations.

The drawings in this book focus on Allyson Reynolds’ continued exploration of found objects and microscopic images. They draw inspiration from the landscape and environment.

In his introductory essay, Daniel Mafé writes " These works, with their dark and liquid spaces murmurously riddled with a breaking light, invite even demand reverie for entrée. These are dreaming images, imagining images - these are images that coerce and demand imaginative engagement".

All 50 drawings from the series have been reproduced at full scale on a beautiful uncoated stock, making them look and feel almost like the originals. This is a hard cover book with stunning wrap around dustjacket. "from soil and stone" is also published as a Limited Edition of 50 books, each of which include one of the original drawings.

This book is published for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition Moth Song at Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London in January 2012.

The paintings in this book focus on Allyson Reynolds’ continued exploration of the moth motif. They are presented here in two bodies of work, moths and score for imagined sound. In his essay, "Of repetition and of song" Daniel Mafé describes Moth Song as “a richly contrasting body of work - a two-part melody. As a whole and in its subtle and evocative way, it sings of joy, life and death, light and dark, abundance, difference and variegation; all is accepted.” Each painting from the series is reproduced, along with selected stunning detail images, photographed by Jon Linkins, allowing the viewer to be immersed in the beauty of these paintings. This is a large (28 x 33cm) hard cover book with magnificent wrap around dustjacket. This book is published for the first time on the occasion of the exhibition Moth Song at Rebecca Hossack Gallery, London in January 2012.
